블루스 음반을 좀 들어보기로 마음 먹은 후에 관련 자료를 찾아보았다. 미국에서 신뢰할만한 재즈/블루스 전문잡지 다운비트(Downbeat)가 2003년 9월호에서 뽑은 추천음반목록이 있었다. 80명의 음악가, 음반사 종사자, 저널리스트에게 무인도에 가져갈 블루스 음반 다섯 개만 뽑으라고 물어서 나온 결과다. 비교적 1950년대 이후의 음반이 주로 뽑힌 이유는 젊은 세대의 감수성이 반영된 탓이다. 각 음반에 대한 간단한 설명을 읽어보려면 여기를 참조하면 된다.
내가 아는 블루스 음악가는 고작 비비킹, 머디 워터스, 하울링 울프, 소니 보이 윌리암슨, 존 리 후커 정도이고 거의 모르는 이들 천지다. 다행히, 동네 공공도서관도 이 목록을 기초로 음반을 구비해 놓았다고 하니, 시간날 때마다 빌려서 들어보고 블로그에 음반평을 써봐야겠다.

블루스 명반 목록을 다룬 가이드북이 두 권이 있다. 하나는 올뮤직에서 나온 건데 대체로 무난하게 잘 정리하고 있지만 평이 좀 심심하다. 다른 하나는 펭귄판인데 요건 영국 비평가 느낌이 아주 강하게 드러나서 재밌긴 하지만 평이 들쑥날쑥하다. 서로 보완되는 면이 있다.
목록을 정리하면서 정보를 확인하느라 아마존에 자주 들어갔다. 이런 정보는 위키보다 아마존이 조금 나은 편이다. 벌써 구할 수 없는 음반이 다수였다. 부지런히 서둘러야겠다.
